Niall Horan Questions Whether He Should Have ‘Looked Into Things More’ With Liam Payne Before Singer’s Death
This is one of those stories that just sits heavy.
Niall Horan is opening up in a deeply personal way about the loss of his former bandmate, Liam Payne, and the lingering questions that have followed ever since the devastating moment of Liam’s death.
Of course, the two first met as teenagers on the X Factor, where they were grouped together alongside Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, and Louis Tomlinson into the iconic five-some One Direction. What followed was global superstardom, but also, as we’ve come to understand over time, immense pressure behind the scenes.

As Perezcious readers know all too well, Liam’s death in October 2024 shocked the world. He fell from a balcony at a hotel in Buenos Aires, and reports later revealed a mix of substances in his system, including alcohol, cocaine, and prescribed antidepressants. It was a tragedy that raised difficult questions about fame, mental health, and support systems — questions that Niall is now confronting in a very real and human way.
Appearing on the Tommy Tiernan Show this week, Niall didn’t shy away from the guilt that can creep in after losing someone. Horan started by saying:
“You start asking yourself: What could I have done? Should I have looked into things more? Should I have spoken to other people? You go through all of that. I knew he’d had a couple of issues… I knew something was going on, but not how deep it was.”
Wow…
That kind of reflection is heartbreaking because it’s so relatable. When someone passes unexpectedly, especially under such complicated and tragic circumstances, the “what ifs” can feel endless.
Niall also shared what ended up being one of his final memories with Liam — and it’s the kind of ordinary, warm interaction that now carries so much weight:
“I’d been playing a gig in Buenos Aires about two weeks earlier, and he happened to be there. We met, had a chat. Then he came back to my hotel during the day for a coffee. Then he came to the gig that night and was in the dressing room beforehand. It was great to see him.”
There’s something especially gut-wrenching about that. No drama. No warning signs that felt urgent enough in the moment. Just two friends catching up, like they had done countless times before.
And then came the moment everything changed, as Niall recalled:
“The tour ended — I finished in Colombia — and about a week later I went home after a long stretch on the road. … I’d only just gotten back when, one night, I was about to go to sleep. I glanced at my phone after getting a text, and that’s when I found out.”
It’s impossible not to feel the shock in that. One second, life is moving forward. The next, it stops cold.
Niall admitted he’s still struggling to fully process it all, and honestly, who wouldn’t be? He said:
“The stages of grief … I don’t think I’ve even begun to process them properly yet. I grew up with him, and suddenly he’s just gone. Nothing prepares you for looking down at your phone and finding out like that. Then, stupidly, I turned on the news — Sky News, CNN, BBC, RTE — and suddenly the whole world was talking about it. It was the biggest story everywhere.”
That added layer — the media so active, the world grieving alongside you, analyzing, speculating — has to make an already unbearable situation even more overwhelming.

Of course, Liam leaves behind his young son, Bear, whom he shared with ex Cheryl Tweedy, as well as his girlfriend Kate Cassidy, who has also spoken publicly about her own grief in the wake of his passing. Their loss is immeasurable, and the ripple effects continue to be felt by those closest to him.
For Niall, this clearly isn’t just about looking back, but living with the questions that may never have clear answers.
Ugh. All we can really do is send love and light…
