Robert Vargas Begins Final Mural in “WE Are Human” Series Honoring Dolores Huerta in Downtown Los Angeles

Acclaimed Los Angeles muralist Robert Vargas has officially begun work on the fifth and final installment of his powerful “WE Are Human” series; this time paying tribute to legendary civil rights icon Dolores Huerta.

Titled “Walking into History,” the large-scale mural is currently taking shape on the exterior rear wall of the Barclay Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles. Spanning seven stories, the ambitious piece is set to be unveiled on April 12, 2026 at 2 p.m. PST during a press conference expected to draw local officials, community leaders, civil rights advocates and perhaps even the 96-year old Huerta herself.

The mural draws inspiration from Huerta’s enduring call to action—“Walk the street with us into history. Get off the sidewalk”— a message that continues to resonate across generations. As co-founder of the United Farm Workers union, Huerta has long been a driving force in the fight for labor rights, racial equity, and social justice, and Vargas’ latest work aims to capture both her legacy and her continued cultural relevance.

The project, created in collaboration with the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, has been nearly a year in the making and coincides with Huerta’s 96th birthday. It also marks the culmination of Vargas’ “WE Are Human” series, which has highlighted influential figures and themes that reflect the diversity, resilience, and history of Los Angeles.

“This mural is more than an image — it’s a statement of resilience, history, and community,” Vargas shared. “Dolores Huerta’s leadership helped change the course of labor rights in this country. She embodies courage, tenacity, and unrelenting hope.”

Known for his striking mixed-media portraits and large-scale public works, Vargas has become a leading figure in the revitalization of Downtown LA’s art scene, using his platform to spotlight voices and stories that have shaped the city’s cultural fabric.

With brushes now in motion and anticipation building, “Walking into History” is poised to become not just a visual landmark, but a lasting tribute to one of the most influential activists of our time.

The public are invited to witness the unveiling on April 12, as Los Angeles once again turns its walls into a canvas for history.
