Melissa Gilbert Knew About Allegations Against Timothy Busfield Before They Got Married — Details

[Warning: Potentially Triggering Content]

Melissa Gilbert is speaking candidly and carefully about the deeply troubling sexual assault allegations surrounding her husband, actor Timothy Busfield.

In a new interview that aired Monday on Good Morning America, the actress made it clear that this is not a situation she entered blindly, nor one she is taking lightly.

Sitting across from George Stephanopoulos, Gilbert addressed the weight of her husband’s past and present legal battles, including multiple allegations spanning decades. From the outside, it may seem like a shocking unraveling. But according to Gilbert, the history was never hidden from her. She said:

“I need to make something abundantly clear. These allegations have been out in the ether for a very long time. When Tim and I got together, the internet existed. I didn’t go into my relationship blind. I’m neither naive nor am I complicit. I talked to him about it. I asked him questions about it. I heard his side of the story — which nobody has ever heard — which is the truth. And when the time is right, and that is not now, Tim will tell the truth of all of these past allegations when he needs to.”

Those past allegations include a 1994 case involving a teenage extra who accused Busfield of sexual misconduct during the filming of Little Big League. The claims were denied by Busfield, who countersued, and the legal battle eventually ended in a settlement without criminal charges.

Years later, another allegation surfaced in 2012, when a woman accused him of inappropriate contact in a movie theater. That case also did not move forward due to lack of evidence, with Busfield maintaining the interaction was consensual.

But it is the most recent accusations that have cast the darkest shadow. Earlier this year, Busfield was arrested on allegations involving two 11-year-old boys connected to a television set in New Mexico. He now faces multiple charges for alleged felony sexual conduct, and he has pleaded not guilty, with the legal process still unfolding.

Behind the headlines and legal filings is a family trying to hold itself together. And Gilbert did not shy away from describing to GMA just how devastating that whole thing has been for them:

“This has been the most traumatizing experience of our lives. Our life as we knew it is done. We are grieving what we had — all of our plans, all of our dreams, all of our ideas, all of our projects. For Tim, it’s done. He’s canceled. Even if he’s exonerated, he will always be that guy.”

A representative for Gilbert emphasized that the decision to speak publicly now was intentional, not reactionary. That rep explained to People:

“[Melissa] decided it was time to sit down to clarify the facts of the case, which seem to have become lost to distraction, selective information and clickbait.”

Still, even as public scrutiny intensifies, Gilbert is standing firmly by her husband. And her words reflect not just loyalty, but a deep conviction shaped by years of shared life and private conversations:

“No one knows him better than I do. I know literally everything about him. Our marriage has, you know, we’ve had a lot of ups and downs. We’ve been through struggles, we’ve had our own issues to deal with and we worked through everything. He’s nothing if not completely honest with me. I trust him with my children’s lives, with my grandchildren’s lives, my nieces and nephews. He is an honorable, caring, generous human being.”

It is a complicated, painful story still unfolding, one that sits at the intersection of love, trust, and serious allegations that demand careful attention.

For now, Gilbert is choosing to speak, not to dismiss the gravity of the situation, but to insist that there is more to the story than what has been seen so far.
