Olivia Wilde Or Liam Payne? Fans Debate Who’s At Center Of New Harry Styles Song!
Harry Styles‘ new album Kiss All The Time, Disco Occasionally is HERE! And fans already have theories about the muse of one of his songs…
Track 11 on the singer’s new album is titled Paint By Numbers, and it just might be the most emotional ballad on the record. And fans think this song could possibly be about his ex Olivia Wilde, or even his late pal Liam Payne. The song begins with the lyrics:
“Oh what a gift it is to be noticed / But it’s nothing to do with me”
Harry did say he saw a lot of himself in Liam. Maybe this could be referring to that? Or, of course, he could’ve felt “noticed” by Olivia when their romance began.
The first verse then has the musician emotionally singing about not even being 33 yet:
“You’re the luckiest / Oh the irony / Holding the weight of the American children whose hearts you break / Was it a tragedy? / When you told her I’m not even 33”
Fans have two big theories about what this could mean!
First, Harries believe this could be a reference to his old flame Olivia, who has two children — Otis and Daisy — with her ex Jason Sudeikis. Harry was 27 at the time he was dating Olivia, which could refer to the part of the age mention. Could this be him talking about how he isn’t closer to her in age?

Another theory, though, is this is about his old One Direction bandmate. As you know, Liam tragically died when he was just 31, which could be what the 33 lyric is referring to. And for the heartbreak of all those “American children”? Fans think this could be referring to 1D’s huge American fanbase. They, of course, were all devastated when Liam passed.
Another lyric that makes fans believe Liam was the muse for this song is:
“A little self compassion and a life within your means”
After the singer’s death, his friends and family have come out talking about how hard he always was on himself. Not only that, Harry sings:
“Kids with water guns / Watch them run”
This could refer to how 1D often had water gun fights on their stages during their tours when they were just kids themselves. So another hint that this is about Liam? Hmm. Listen to the song for yourself (below):
Across socials, fans reacted:
“There is no way people be listening to paint by numbers and genuinely believing he wrote a song about ow kids. it’s about [1D]”
“paint by numbers just being about harry leaving the stepdad life with OW to go to the club”
“i can’t believe yall were saying paint by numbers was a song for liam … it’s about harry not wanting to be the dad that stepped up with Olivia”
“i can’t believe u ppl think that paint by numbers is about harry not wanting to be a dad to olivia’s kids ? reading comprehension is a lost art”
This isn’t the only hint about Liam, though. The album as a whole seems to be paying homage to his past adventures, which makes fans think this entire project is 1D-centric. Harry released a new music video on Friday for his song American Girls, and its chock-full of references to his old band.
The video begins with Harry sitting on a motorcycle and having fans blown in his face, which Directioners will know is a throwback to the Kiss You music video, where the same thing happened to the 1D boys.
Plus, the scenery in the video and the location looks almost identical to what was used in Steal My Girl!
So many signs pointing to One Direction and lyrics seemingly referencing his past with his bandmates, it’s no wonder why everyone thinks his new song might be about Liam.
