What Was Supposed To Happen On The Cancelled Buffy Reboot? All The Details — Sarah Michelle Gellar Barely Had Any Screen Time!
As you know, hopes for the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot were lost when Hulu suddenly cancelled the production — seemingly out of nowhere, according to the cast.
We previously reported on how Sarah Michelle Gellar thought it was going to be an awesome series, but for some reason, one exec just didn’t want to move forward. He allegedly wasn’t even a fan of Buffy, either, which is so frustrating! But could there be more to the story of why the show was canned?
Well, Variety got ahold of the pilot episode script written by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman — set to be directed by Chloé Zhao — and it gives us an inside look at the whole new world being created in Sunnydale.
As we’re sure you’ve seen, sometimes reboots with entirely new casts and characters just don’t work. They don’t hit the spot like the OG crew did, and eventually lead to early cancellations or disappointment. And even though we never got to see Ryan Kiera Armstrong act as a new slayer, it’s def worth noting that this new script barely had ANYTHING to do with SMG’s iconic Buffy Summers — at least to start with.

The new story was set to follow Nova, a high schooler (played by Ryan) who’s a slayer. The town knows some history regarding slayers at this point due to everything that went down with Buffy back in the day. Nova attends a Renaissance style festival called “Vampire Weekend” where she takes down two real-life vampires and ends up making some friends — her own “Scooby Gang” — along the way.
As for what would come after that, it sounds pretty effing sweet! All the vampires that Buffy slayed and buried back in the OG series finale have reawakened, and now that Nova has come into her powers, she’s got to take them all back down.
Cool!
But even if this show went forward, fans wouldn’t get to see much of SMG. The script then details how after the Sunnydale story, the scene changes to a “beautiful autumn day” in NYC, where a “woman in a pantsuit” walks into an office building. The nameplate on her cubicle was set to say “Anne Summers,” and one of her coworkers teases her about being late to the morning meeting.
That’s when Sarah Michelle would’ve delivered her one and only line:
“Nope… wouldn’t want that.”
And that’s that! The beloved Buffy Anne Summers would be living a normal, everyday life in NYC! But that’s not to say things wouldn’t have changed if the series progressed… In that scene, she started getting tons of emails about insurance claims coming in from Sunnydale, California.
Oh man! It really does sound like a nice concept. Are U sad this won’t ever see the light of day — or are we better off without another reboot? Sound OFF (below).
