DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE NEW ALBUM ‘I BUILT YOU A TOWER’ OUT JUNE 5TH
Indie rock favorites Death Cab for Cutie are ushering in a new era with the upcoming release of their album I Built You A Tower, arriving June 5 via ANTI- Records.
The band dropped their latest single and music video, “Punching The Flowers,” the second track unveiled from the album last month.
The song delivers the band’s signature emotional depth layered with jagged guitars and raw energy, as frontman Ben Gibbard transforms a real-life moment — watching a toddler angrily punch flowers outside a bodega — into a meditation on frustration, emotional stagnation, and feeling trapped by familiarity.
Directed by Jason Lester, the newly released music video visually expands on the song’s themes while continuing the introspective tone surrounding the band’s forthcoming 11th studio album.
I Built You A Tower marks a major shift for the band as their first independent release after two decades with Atlantic Records. Produced by acclaimed collaborator John Congleton, the album was recorded across Los Angeles, Seattle, Portland, and Bellingham in a stripped-down creative process that the band says reconnected them to their earliest roots.
The project also arrives following an emotional and physically demanding chapter for Gibbard, who balanced massive anniversary tours for both Death Cab for Cutie and The Postal Service while navigating the collapse of his personal life in the background. “There’s this need to find a place in ourselves to put loss and grief,” he explains. “A place that can hold it so we can move on with our lives. But there are these moments where the trauma breaks out of that shell we created for it.”
Fans can expect a deeply reflective album exploring grief, reinvention, and moving forward, while still capturing the soaring emotional sound that made Death Cab one of indie rock’s defining bands over the last three decades.
Alongside the new release, the band recently announced a North American summer tour following their sold-out Transatlanticism anniversary run and continued success of 2022’s Asphalt Meadows.
