Interview with Sublime’s Jakob Nowell, New Album “Until the Sun Explodes”
As Sublime ushers in a new era, frontman Jakob Nowell is helping carry forward one of music’s most influential legacies while forging a path all his own.
The band’s highly anticipated new album, Until The Sun Explodes, officially arrives June 12, marking Sublime’s first full-length studio release to feature Jakob Nowell as frontman alongside original members Bud Gaugh and Eric Wilson. Released June 12 via Atlantic Records, the 21-track album serves as both a celebration of Sublime’s enduring legacy and a heartfelt tribute to the band’s late founder, Bradley Nowell.
Featuring collaborations with H.R. of Bad Brains, Fletcher Dragge of Pennywise, G. Love, FIDLAR, and Skegss, Until The Sun Explodes blends the reggae, punk, ska, and alternative influences that made Sublime a Southern California institution while introducing a fresh perspective for a new generation of fans. The title track, which closes the album, is particularly meaningful, with Jakob describing it as “an epilogue” to the band’s iconic self-titled album and a personal thank you to his father.
The release arrives during a landmark year for the band as they celebrate the 30th anniversary of Sublime’s groundbreaking 1996 self-titled album. From sold-out shows at Red Rocks and a Grammy Museum exhibit, Sublime: Straight From Long Beach, to the launch of their own touring music festival and upcoming Reef Madness cruise, 2026 has become a full-circle moment for one of Southern California’s most influential bands.
Ahead of the release, Press Pass LA caught up with Jakob to discuss stepping into his father’s legacy, creating new music under the Sublime banner, and what fans can expect from Until The Sun Explodes.
